The reason why “The greatest gift is the gift of giving” is true has nothing to do with altruism, or giving back to some nonexistent 21st century internet age “community”. Perhaps at some abstract level the protestant ethic or lockean social contract can be made as a justification, but it’s not the most basic version.
It is true because there has to be someone willing to accept you for you to give it.
